The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Backup Options
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
